 UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said New York, June 17, 2003 (ENS)

In a message marking World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, Annan warned that increasing land degradation is threatening food production and triggering humanitarian and economic crises.

HOW TO STOP THE DESERT GROWTH ?

Farmers are also losing land to expanding deserts, such as the Gobi,

which is consuming an additional 4,000 square miles each year.

 

 

This village used to be the home of more than 4,000 people. 

By the year 2000, all of them had moved away and the village became completely deserted.
